Spring in Big Bear

April 7, 2015 by Big Bear Real Estate Leave a Comment

The daffodils are in bloom, the birds are singing, and the fresh mountain air is invigorating.  Though winter chill may linger in the early spring days, spring is a wonderful time to enjoy the good life in our mountain oasis.  Here are three cool things that this season brings.

1. Big Bear Lake is Open

It’s time to get out on the lake!

On April 1st, the Big Bear Lake Municipal Water District opened the Carol Morrison Public Launch for the 2015 season.  The launch ramp, more commonly known as the East Ramp, is located on the north shore near Stanfield Cutoff.  Fishing and watercraft enthusiasts can take advantage of this well-maintained launch facility which features trailer parking, lakeside picnic areas, a beach, and a fishing/observation dock.  The Duane Boyer West Launch Ramp will open on May 8 offering even more public access to the lake.  Several marinas have opened for business including Big Bear Marina, Holloway’s, and Pine Knot Landing.  Rental offerings include pontoon boats, fishing boats, canoes and lake tours.

Attention anglers!  The lake has been stocked with about 750,000 trout over the past couple of weeks and another 500,000 will arrive later this month.  This is good news for fisherman and the Big Bear Lake fishing industry, as this should help increase the trout population for years to come.  In addition to trout, the lake also has both large and small mouth bass, catfish, crappie, and bluegill.

2. Scenic Sky Chair and Mountain Bike Park

Winter is over, but that doesn’t mean there is no more fun to be had on the slopes!

According to the Big Bear Mountain Resorts website, the Snow Summit Mountain Bike Park will open for the 2015 riding season on May 8.  The park will operate on weekends (Fri, Sat, Sun) through June 19, and will be open daily after that.

Ride the Scenic Sky Chair to the top and access the trails for hiking and downhill and cross-country biking.  Or, just relax and enjoy the view while having a BBQ lunch at the View Haus.  2015 Mountain Bike Season Passes are available now.

3. Big Bear Farmers Market

Farmers Market returned to Big Bear on Tuesday, April 7.  Located at the Convention Center, it will run every Tuesday though September.

According to an article in the Big Bear Grizzly, Kerri Santoro has been running the market in Big Bear since 1993, after launching the High Desert Farmers Market in Apple Valley the year before.  The Big Bear Farmers Market has grown in popularity over the years and now features more than 25 farmers, in addition to dozens of specialty food vendors and local arts and craft vendors.  Santoro says the food does not travel far to get to the Big Bear market, most of the farms are nearby in Southern California.  Everything is vine ripened and hand picked making it more nutritionally valuable.

The Big Bear Farmers Market is open Tuesdays from 8:30 am to 1 pm at the Convention Center at Big Bear Lake, 42900 Big Bear Blvd.
