The Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest celebrates 54 years of German fun

Oktoberfest is back!  Rated the #1 Oktoberfest in Southern California, the Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest offers a unique experience unlike any other and attracts thousands of visitors every year.

Set in a gorgeous alpine setting at the Big Bear Lake Convention Center, the Big Bear Lake October festival is a true German celebration based on the lore of the world’s original Oktoberfest.  Guests are treated to authentic German entertainment, feast on Brats and Knockwursts direct from the German butcher, and enjoy the very same beers poured at Munich’s Oktoberfest for more than 150 years.  There is something for everyone – live music and dancing, contests (stein carrying) and competitions (log sawing), and children’s activities.  Outside the venue, you can take a stroll along the Budenstrasse (avenue of the booths) and shop for handmade arts, crafts and collectibles.

The 2024 Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest runs every weekend beginning Saturday, September 7 through Saturday, November 2.

4th of July Fireworks Spectacular

Thursday, July 4, 2024 – Fireworks show visible from the water, shoreline, and some trail vantage points. Show starts between 8:45-9:15 PM, runs approximately 30-40 mins.

The Fireworks Spectacular explodes over Big Bear Lake every July 4th and is FREE to spectators. Local radio station KBHR airs a musical accompaniment to the show on 93.3 FM and 102.5 FM.

Thursday, July 4, 2024 – Snow Summit, 880 Summit Blvd 7:00-9:00 PM

SOLD OUT – Elevate your 4th of July at Above the Boom, featuring panoramic views of the Big Bear Fireworks Spectacular. Enjoy live entertainment, dinner, family-friendly activities, and more before your roundtrip on the Scenic Sky Chair to watch the fireworks from the top of Snow Summit.

Independence Day Faire

Traffic Plan for the City of Big Bear Lake

Please be advised that the City of Big Bear Lake implements a strict traffic plan at the conclusion of the fireworks show. The plan helps mitigate heavy traffic that is typical after the show and designed to keep you moving safely from your watch spot to your house.

From the Dam to Division Rd, only right-hand turns will be permitted onto Big Bear Blvd.

Personal Fireworks Illegal in Big Bear Valley

From Big Bear Lake Fire Department:

Personal fireworks are illegal throughout Big Bear Valley, including “safe and sane” fireworks. In addition, all fireworks that explode, shoot into the air or move along the ground are termed dangerous and are illegal anywhere in California.  Report illegal fireworks.

From San Bernardino County Fire Protection District:

Possession of any type of fireworks, including “safe and sane” fireworks, is against the law in any unincorporated area of San Bernardino County. In the event a fire occurs due to the unsafe use of fireworks, the responsible persons are likely to face criminal charges and be held liable for damages.

Set sail and find treasure at Memorial Day Weekend yard sales in Big Bear!

Who, What, Where, When, Why…?

Who?

Big Bear homeowners with “stuff” to sell know that Memorial Day Weekend is the weekend to sell it at a yard sale in Big Bear. Any homeowner, especially new homeowners in need of stuff for their cabin, will find it during this weekend!

What?

Everything from knick-knacks to furnishings, clothing, sports equipment, boats, cars, kitchen & household supplies, tools, patio furniture…you name it. All at yard sale prices.

Where?

Many yard sales can be found in the central Big Bear Lake area, but there will also be yard sales from Boulder Bay to Fox Farm to Moonridge to Big Bear City and the rest of east valley. The Big Bear Grizzly newspaper will have classified ads for some yard sales, but there will be signs everywhere around town, so just get in your car and set sail!

When?

Starting on Friday morning (May 24, 2024), you will have the “locals advantage” because most visitors have not yet arrived in Big Bear for the weekend.  So, if you are a serious “Yard Sailor”, plan to be up and running early Friday morning. There will still be lots of great treasure-hunting on Saturday too, the earlier the better. Sunday sales start to have slim pickin’s, although you may find better bargains. Get up early, grab a cup of Joe, and bring plenty of cash and space in your vessel.

Why?

In a second-home town where furnishings transfer from owner to owner when a house sells (after every 5 years on average), there is just a lot of stuff that gets passed around – much of it only gently used. You really can furnish a house on the cheap in Big Bear if you attack these yard sales!

If you own a revenue-generating resort market investment cabin in Big Bear, this is the weekend to replace worn items of furniture, add life to your cabin décor, and create a stash of replacement items for the future. It will ultimately benefit your bottom line and add to the enjoyment of your cabin.

So, if you need to furnish your new cabin, update or refresh items, or sell stuff because you are redecorating or moving on, Memorial Day Weekend in Big Bear is the time to do it. Find your treasure and Happy “Yard Sailing”!
